The situation

Kunal DesaiHead of Product, Tanpura

Hey, welcome to Tanpura!

We start talking to investors next month, and every one of them will ask the same thing: do people stay? Our dashboard counts sign-ups and payments, which isn't the same, so I'd like the real numbers.

From the data since we launched paid plans in January:

  • How many new paying users we got in June.
  • The April cohort's month-3 retention.
  • Our monthly recurring revenue (MRR) in September.
  • Which channel brings the users who stay longest.
  • One month's new users seem to have vanished almost at once. Which month's cohort, and why?

The handbook has our definitions. Please stick to them: the last deck had a retention number nobody could reproduce.

Use any tools you like, AI included. And give me a short note: what would you tell the investors, and what should we do next?

Thanks, Kunal

When you start, you get Tanpura's handbook and your own data: the same story as everyone else's, with different records, so your answers are yours alone.

What you hand in

  1. 1June's new paying users: Users whose first successful payment was in June (a count)
  2. 2April cohort, month 3: The April cohort's month-3 retention, as a percent to one decimal (a percent, to one decimal place)
  3. 3September MRR: Monthly recurring revenue in September, in rupees (in whole rupees)
  4. 4The channel that keeps users: Pooling the January to June cohorts, which channel's users have the best month-3 retention?
  5. 5The cohort that vanished: Which cohort, January to August, has the worst month-1 retention?
  6. 6Why it vanished: What explains that cohort's month-1 retention?
  7. 7Your working: The spreadsheet, SQL or notebook that produces your answers, as a link anyone can open.
  8. 8A note to Kunal: 200 words at most.
  9. 9How you used AI: Your prompts or the chat, if you used it.

Your figures and your conclusions are checked against your own data the moment you hand in. The pass mark is 70 of 100, and September's MRR must be right. Hand in as often as you need; every hand-in is counted.
