The situation

Meera KulkarniAccounts Manager, Saathi Distributors

Good morning, and welcome to Saathi!

Our salesmen keep telling me "everyone pays eventually", and our bank keeps telling me we're short of cash. Before Monday's sales meeting I need the truth about who owes us what.

As at the close of 30 September, please give me:

  • Total outstanding: everything our customers still owe us.
  • How much of it is not yet due, and how much is 1–30, 31–60, 61–90 and over 90 days past due.
  • For every customer, what we do next, under our collections policy (it's in the handbook): stop supplying them, call them, or send a reminder. Leave out anyone who doesn't need chasing.

Fair warning: our payment records are messy. Customers write invoice numbers however they like, some just send money "on account", and a few cheques bounced.

Use any tools you like, AI included. And write me a short note for the sales meeting: who worries you most, and what should change.

Thanks, Meera

When you start, you get Saathi Distributors's handbook and your own data: the same story as everyone else's, with different records, so your answers are yours alone.

What you hand in

  1. 1Total outstanding: Everything our customers still owe us at the close of 30 September (in whole rupees)
  2. 2Not yet due: Outstanding, but not yet past its due date (in whole rupees)
  3. 31–30 days past due: Outstanding and 1 to 30 days past due (in whole rupees)
  4. 431–60 days past due: Outstanding and 31 to 60 days past due (in whole rupees)
  5. 561–90 days past due: Outstanding and 61 to 90 days past due (in whole rupees)
  6. 6Over 90 days past due: Outstanding and more than 90 days past due (in whole rupees)
  7. 7Collections: A table with two columns, customer_id and action, uploaded as a CSV or pasted.
  8. 8Your working: The spreadsheet, SQL or notebook that produces your answers, as a link anyone can open.
  9. 9A note to Meera: 200 words at most.
  10. 10How you used AI: Your prompts or the chat, if you used it.

Your figures and your collections list are checked against your own data the moment you hand in. The pass mark is 70 of 100, and the total outstanding must be right. Hand in as often as you need; every hand-in is counted.
