The situation
Hi, and welcome to Sootli!
Here's the puzzle I've been handed. On paper, every product we sell has a gross margin of 55 to 65 percent, so the founders believe every product makes money. But September's cash went out faster than it came in, and they're about to approve a bigger ad budget across the whole catalogue.
Before they do, I want to know what each product really earns us once returns, shipping and its own ads are paid for. For September:
- Our net revenue, and our gross margin.
- Our total contribution: every product's, added up.
- Which products lost money, and for each, the one cost that sank it.
- How much those loss-makers cost us between them.
Please use our definitions in the handbook. Shipping is the fiddly part: the courier bills us by order, not by product.
Use any tools you like, AI included. Then write me a short note: what should we do about each loss-maker?
Thanks, Ishaan
When you start, you get Sootli Home's handbook and your own data: the same story as everyone else's, with different records, so your answers are yours alone.
What you hand in
- 1Net revenue: September's net revenue, every product, in rupees (in whole rupees)
- 2Gross margin: Net revenue less the cost of the goods delivered (in whole rupees)
- 3Total contribution: Every product's contribution, added up (in whole rupees)
- 4What the loss-makers cost: The contribution of the products that lost money, added up (a negative number) (in whole rupees)
- 5Loss-makers: A table with two columns, sku and reason, uploaded as a CSV or pasted.
- 6Your working: The spreadsheet, SQL or notebook that produces your answers, as a link anyone can open.
- 7A note to Ishaan: 200 words at most.
- 8How you used AI: Your prompts or the chat, if you used it.
Your figures and your loss-makers are checked against your own data the moment you hand in. The pass mark is 70 of 100, and the total contribution must be right. Hand in as often as you need; every hand-in is counted.
